The Trusses Have Arrived
Rich BThe trusses arrived yesterday and are waiting for us to install them Saturday. That's the good news.

The bad news is that the driver dropped them next to the house -- right where the crane needs to set up.

So, we will be awfully busy early Saturday morning moving, organizing, and laying out the trusses before the crane arrives at 9:30.

In case that's not enough, we have a threat of rain for Saturday, so please do check the web site at 7:30 Saturday morning for any posted cancellation.

"By My Works I Will Show You My Faith"
Rich BI caught Mercedes ruminating on that scripture toward the end of the day today (you should have noticed that written on the sign in front of our project).

And how faith was in abundance today! I never cease to be amazed at what a small but dedicated group of disciples can accomplish in a day. From a skeleton of bare sticks, the home continued to take shape as we completed the exterior sheathing. With an inspection over the next two weeks we will be ready for truss installation and window and door installation in two weeks (Dec. 5).

Be there and we'll help you burn off some Thanksgiving calories -- see you then!

All's Quiet Now, But . . .
Rich BIt sure was rockin' and rollin' just a little over an hour ago. What an amazing wall raising day:
  • Imam Abdula Sykes, president of a local branch of the Islam Society, brought his group with him to help raise the walls.
  • The Chi Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa from the west campus of Valencia Community College pitched in.
  • And of course our regular faithful St. Luke's Voluteers were at the ready.
We raised all but three small interior walls and erected the posts and beams that define the porch and carport. In short -- Mercedes saw a bare slab of concrete transformed into the skeleton of her new home in one day!

What an amazing couple of days!
Rich BFriday our hero Brooks Gilmore moved the immovable object and got our slab poured. Bravo! As three concrete trucks were circling the property we were accepting delivery of building material and the washer and dryer (we either got it now or we weren't gonna get it).

Saturday was another amazing day as we stripped the forms from the slab, formed the carport and driveway, laid out the walls on the slab, cut and laid out the wall top and bottom plates, built the headers and studs, and build the beams!

Sooooooooo -- we are ready for wall raising next Saturday, November 14!

C'mon Concrete!
Rich BYours truly was unable to work this past Saturday, which probably explains why so much was accomplished! We are ready to have the slab poured, which is currently scheduled for Friday. So we will be awfully busy Saturday preparing for framing day, which is next Saturday, November 14.

Amazing Progress
Rich BThis past Saturday a dedicated (and sweaty) group of volunteers set the forms and dug the footers. It's amazing the progress we can make once we get started!

We are Under Way!
Rich BA small group of spent Saturday morning locating the corners of the lot and the building and setting the batter boards. Our Bob Cat driver also came by Saturday morning to finish grading the rear of the lots. This coming Saturday we dig the footers and set the foundation forms. Bring your gloves and shovels.

WE HAVE A PERMIT
Rich BI picked up the permit this afternoon. I submitted the application Wednesday afternoon, spent much yesterday running errands on the process, and picked it up today. So hitch up your toolbelts -- we start digging next Saturday!

Dedication Sunday, March 22
Rich BWe just completed the dedication of the 24th house that West Orange Habitat for Humanity built and the 7th house that St. Luke's United Methodist Church was involved in (in fact, this is the 4th house that St. Luke's UMC was entirely responsible for the construction of). Congratulations, Mariel Jackson!

Saturday, December 6
Rich BWe were not able to install the insulation because we didn't have our framing inspection yet. Also, we ran out of siding trim, so we were not able to complete the siding either. However, we were able to install some of the plywood ceiling above the porch and carport.

Saturday, November 29
Rich BA small but energetic group of us came out to day to get ready for the framing inspection. Mariel and her crew completed blocking the kitchen and bathrooms for cabinets and cut out the interior door thresholds. Another crew worked to get the siding installed on the east and front walls. It was a gorgeous day all around.

Rich BThe siding installers arrived today to help us get started on the siding. A special thanks to Brooks, Jon, and Travis for participating in this "last minute work day" to help the installers and gain some new techniques.

Saturday, November 8
Rich BWe continue to be blessed by excellent weather and dedicated volunteers. By the time we left at 2:30 the house was dried in, all the exterior doors and windows were installed, the interior soffit vents were installed, and all the cabinet blocking was installed in the kitchen.

Next week we will be installing siding with the help of professional installers.

Saturday, November 1
Rich BWow! Roof decking in a day. That is a record. The scaffolding was delivered and set up for us last week, which enabled the crew to "get right to it" cutting the rafter tails and installing the rough fascia.

Also, another crew installed the house wrap and started installation of the exterior doors.

With a successful inspection this week we will be ready to dry the house in and complete installation of the exterior doors and windows.

Saturday, October 18
Rich BAnother busy and blessedly successful work day. By time the crane arrived you had the first girder truss set and its jack trusses connected. The crane made short work of the installation of the rest of the trusses.
Next week we will finish bracing the trusses and install the roof decking.

Monday, October 13
Rich BThe trusses were delivered today, but, sadly, not without incident. The trusses hit our trailer when they were rolled off the truck leaving a nice big dent behind the left wheel well.
We're now looking forward to Saturday and the arrival of our CRANE to help us set the trusses.

Rich BMany thanks go out to the small but mighty force of volunteers who made today such a success. A number of walls needed to be re-braced when the plumbers removed our bracing to install the shower enclosures. you installed the carport posts and beams and all the wall sheathing.

Saturday, October 4
Rich BWall Raising -- and 50 of you made it one of our most successful ever. In addition to building and installing all of the exterior and interior walls, you set up the tool trailer, and build the beams for the porch and carport. Thank you also to the covenant group who provided a wonderful lunch.

Saturday, September 27
Rich BWell, if the previous Saturday rated a WOW!, then this past Saturday rated a W-O-W-!!!! We had 46 volunteers, not including Mariel and her family! The University of Kentucky Alumni Association joined the rest of the "regulars" to contribute to a wildly successful (if not overwhelming for Tom) work day. As Tom laid out the top and bottom plates, you cut the top and bottom plates for him, created the door and window headers, and and cut and manufactured all the studs. And if that wasn't enough, you actually built the west wall! Saturday was also the first lunch day and a hearty thanks goes out to the wonderful volunteers who provided lunch and snacks. This week we will have the carport and driveway poured (this was delayed due to some scheduling issues with the plumbers) and next Saturday is wall raising day. Come be a part of this historic event.
